On the
25th of April, St Faith's welcomed the folk band Spinndrift to the
church as part of the fundraising for church renovations, the band
playing only for their travel expenses. The concert was arranged with
Jenny Page (fiddle & oboe), who is well known to members of St
Faith's being a long time member of the choir, the Music Group and the
servers. They played two sets of approximately 45 minutes each, with a
break for refreshments and the inevitable raffle. The music was wide
ranging including contributions from the British Isles, Scandinavia,
Eastern Europe and included a song written by the singer Isla Hughes on
slum clearances in her birthplace, Hong Kong. The band demonstrated
their multi-instrumental abilities, playing melodeon, fiddle (x2),
flute, whistle, oboe, tenor guitar, mandolin and cello, and played
several of their own compositions. They all attend the Folk &
Traditional Music degree at Newcastle University, but have now been
playing together for over a year as a non-university combination. More
information on the band can be found by clicking here.
